Browse all fieldsComputer Science is the most competitive field for Indian applicants abroad, and the numbers are brutal. Top US programs like CMU, Stanford, MIT, and Berkeley admit fewer than 5% of applicants to their CS masters programs. The GRE barely matters anymore — what matters is research publications, strong recommendation letters from known professors, and demonstrated coding ability through internships or open-source contributions.
The US is the undisputed leader for CS and AI, primarily because of industry proximity. A CS degree from a top-50 US school gives you direct access to FAANG, top startups, and the OPT work visa. But do not sleep on Canada — Waterloo, UofT, and UBC have outstanding CS programs with lower tuition and a clear path to permanent residency. The UK's 1-year masters is fast but the 2-year post-study visa is tight for building a career in tech.
The biggest mistake Indian CS applicants make is applying to the same 10 schools as everyone else. UIUC, UT Austin, Georgia Tech, and UW Seattle have CS departments that rival the Ivies but with higher acceptance rates. ETH Zurich and TUM in Europe are world-class for AI research at a fraction of US costs. If you are serious about AI/ML research, look at where the papers are being published — that is your shortlist, not the QS ranking.
