The Complete Guide to Choosing IB Diploma Subjects for Indian Students

The IB Diploma Programme requires students to take six subjects across a structured group system, plus the core requirements of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). For Indian students, selecting the right combination is a strategic decision that must account for university admissions requirements, score optimisation, career pathway alignment, and the unique challenges of studying IB in India.

Understanding the IB Group System

Every IB Diploma candidate must take one subject from each of Groups 1 through 5. Group 1 (Studies in Language and Literature) is typically English A for Indian students, taken at either HL or SL. Group 2 (Language Acquisition) is usually French B, Spanish B, or Hindi B. Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) includes Economics, Psychology, Business Management, History, and others. Group 4 (Sciences) includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Environmental Systems and Societies. Group 5 (Mathematics) requires choosing between Math AA (Analysis and Approaches) and Math AI (Applications and Interpretation).

Group 6 (The Arts) is the only group that allows substitution. Students can replace their Arts subject with a second subject from any of Groups 1 through 4. This is extremely common among STEM-oriented Indian students, who typically take a second science (such as both Physics and Chemistry) instead of an Arts subject. This substitution is completely standard and does not disadvantage students in any way.

The HL vs SL Decision

Each student takes three subjects at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Some schools allow four HLs, which is demanding but can be advantageous for competitive applications. The HL/SL decision is primarily driven by university requirements. UK universities publish specific HL requirements for each course — for example, Engineering at Imperial requires Math AA HL and Physics HL, and Medicine at Cambridge requires Chemistry HL. US universities are generally less prescriptive about HL choices, but strong HL scores in relevant subjects signal academic preparation.

The strategic principle is straightforward: take your strongest and most relevant subjects at HL, and use SL for subjects where you need a respectable score without investing maximum effort. Language B subjects at SL are popular score boosters, as are Business Management SL and Psychology SL. Math AI SL is the easiest mathematics option but severely limits university choices — most STEM and business programmes require at least Math AA SL, and many require Math AA HL.

Math AA vs Math AI: The Critical Choice

This is the most consequential subject decision in the IB Diploma. Math AA (Analysis and Approaches) is the traditional mathematics course covering calculus, algebra, and proof-based reasoning. Math AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on statistics, modelling, and technology-assisted mathematics. For any student considering engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science at university, Math AA is required — typically at HL. Business and economics programmes generally accept Math AI HL as an alternative to Math AA, though the most competitive programmes (LSE Economics, Wharton) prefer Math AA.

Math AI SL is the minimum level of IB mathematics and should only be chosen by students who are confident they will not pursue any quantitative field at university. It closes doors permanently. Indian students, who typically have stronger mathematical foundations than their international peers, are often well-positioned for Math AA HL — particularly those with CBSE or ICSE backgrounds where calculus is introduced earlier.

Subject Combinations by Intended Major

For engineering and computer science, the ideal combination includes Math AA HL, Physics HL, and a third HL in either Chemistry, Computer Science, or Economics. The SL subjects should include English A, a Language B, and any remaining Group 3 or 4 subject. UK engineering programmes are strict about requiring both Math AA HL and Physics HL — without these, applications to Imperial, Cambridge, and most Russell Group universities will be rejected outright.

For medicine, UK universities require Chemistry HL and Biology HL at minimum, with most also requiring or recommending Math AA (HL or SL). The third HL is flexible — Physics HL, Psychology HL, or a humanities subject are all acceptable. US pre-med applicants have more flexibility since most American universities do not specify HL requirements, but strong scores in science HLs signal preparation for rigorous pre-med coursework.

For business and economics, Economics HL is the core subject. Math AA HL or Math AI HL provides the quantitative foundation. The third HL depends on the target: History HL or English A HL adds analytical breadth for US applications, while a second quantitative HL (Physics or Computer Science) suits more technical business programmes. LSE and other top UK business schools explicitly require or prefer Math AA.

The Indian Student Context

Indian IB students face unique considerations. First, the JEE/NEET dual-track question: some families want their child to keep Indian competitive exam options open while pursuing IB. This is possible but extremely demanding. IB Physics HL and Chemistry HL cover JEE-relevant content, but the depth and problem-solving approach differ significantly. Students attempting both paths need to start coaching by Grade 10 and accept that either their IB scores or their competitive exam preparation (or both) will be compromised.

Second, language choices matter strategically. Taking Hindi B at SL is an easy route to a high score for native Hindi speakers, but some counsellors argue it does not demonstrate the same level of challenge as French B or Spanish B. English A is almost universal for Indian IB students, but the choice between Literature and Language & Literature matters — Language & Literature is slightly more accessible for students whose English writing is functional but not exceptional.
