Expert Take: Arts, Media & Humanities for Indian Students

Arts, media, and humanities are the fields where Indian families panic the most — and often for the wrong reasons. The assumption that a humanities degree abroad is a waste of money is outdated. Psychology is now one of the highest-demand fields in healthcare. Film production graduates from USC, NYU Tisch, and UCLA work at studios earning six figures. Journalism from Northwestern Medill or Columbia opens doors that no Indian journalism school can. The question is not whether these fields have careers — they do — but whether the specific program justifies the investment.

The US dominates for film (USC SCA, NYU Tisch, UCLA TFT), journalism (Medill, Columbia), and psychology (top research universities with APA-accredited clinical programs). The UK is strong for drama (RADA, LAMDA, and university programs at Bristol and Warwick), English literature (Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh), and media studies. For Indian students, the creative portfolio or writing sample is what makes or breaks your application — grades and test scores are secondary.

The hard truth about arts and humanities: career outcomes are bimodal. Graduates from top programs do exceptionally well. Graduates from mediocre programs struggle. There is very little middle ground. If you are not getting into a top-20 program in your specific field, reconsider the investment. Also, many of these fields do not qualify for STEM OPT in the US, which means you get only 1 year of work authorization instead of 3. Plan your visa strategy before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Arts, Media & Humanities

Is studying film abroad worth it for Indian students?
At top programs — USC School of Cinematic Arts, NYU Tisch, and UCLA TFT — absolutely. These schools have direct pipelines to Hollywood studios, production houses, and streaming platforms. Graduates earn $60,000-$120,000+ depending on specialization. However, film programs outside the top 10 have much weaker placement. If you cannot get into a top program, consider starting in the Indian film industry and building credits first.
What are the best universities for psychology abroad?
For research psychology, US universities dominate: Stanford, Yale, Michigan, and UCLA have top-ranked programs. For clinical psychology (practicing as a therapist), you need an APA-accredited program in the US or BPS-accredited in the UK. UCL, Edinburgh, and Vanderbilt (HOD program) are excellent options. Note: practicing clinical psychology abroad requires country-specific licensure — research this before applying.
Can I get a job abroad with a humanities degree?
Yes, but your pathway is different from STEM graduates. Humanities graduates from top programs enter consulting (McKinsey actively recruits liberal arts majors), media, publishing, tech (UX research, content strategy), policy, and education. The key challenge: most humanities programs do not qualify for STEM OPT in the US, so you get 1 year of work authorization instead of 3. Canada and the UK have more flexible post-study work options.
What portfolio do I need for art or design school admissions?
Art and design portfolios should show 15-20 pieces demonstrating range, process, and a personal voice. Include observational drawing, conceptual work, and finished pieces in your medium. Top schools like Parsons, RISD, and the Royal College of Art want to see how you think creatively, not just technical skill. Document your process — sketches, iterations, and artist statements matter as much as final pieces.
Is journalism a viable career for Indian students studying abroad?
At top programs like Northwestern Medill and Columbia Journalism, yes — graduates enter major publications, broadcast networks, and digital media companies. The field is evolving: data journalism, multimedia storytelling, and podcast production are growing areas. However, traditional print journalism is shrinking. If you study journalism abroad, specialize in digital, data, or video — these skills transfer across borders and industries.
