Podcast · Figuring Out with Raj Shamani

Dr. Karan Gupta on Figuring Out

The ₹3 crore question, what a great university is actually selling, rapid-fire university tests, the money test, the course test, house rankings, and the Money-Market-Skills map for every young Indian.

Six Students, Six Different Answers

Raj put six profiles on the table. The same year and the same budget produce opposite advice depending on the student. Which one is closest to you?

The safe bet

70% academics, ₹25 lakh budget, wants no debt and a stable job

Do not go. An ISB-type MBA in India is the safer bet at this profile.

The risk taker

Top 10% talent, published research, can fund ₹1 crore, wants AI, robotics or EV

Go to the US, and only the top: Ivies, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Berkeley. A STEM master's gives three years of OPT.

The budget hustler

18, decent academics, nursing, ₹15 lakh a year, wants to stay abroad long term

Mix US, UK and Europe. Three years of UK undergrad, then a one-year US master's: one US year paid for instead of four.

The PR chaser

Will study anything, just wants permanent residency

Australia and New Zealand still have a PR path; Canada gives PR but not jobs; learn Spanish or French and look at Europe. Pick quant, tech, healthcare or renewable energy.

The prestige hunter

Excellent academics, ₹2 crore plus, wants an Ivy name

The US by default. Outside it, Imperial, NUS, IE and ESADE carry the same weight.

The 30-year-old at ₹1 lakh a month

Indian bachelor's and master's, average, wants to earn properly

An MBA, not a master's, with a STEM or finance concentration, at schools where 90% of the class is placed within three months.

The two questions I asked on the show

Answer them and the team will tell you which of the six you are closest to, and what the honest next step is.

No free counselling here, and we say so on the show: the initial consultation is paid, and it is the honest version of this conversation. Nobody is paid by a university to advise you.

The Frameworks From the Episode

The ₹3 Crore Question

Whose ₹3 crore is it? Never finance a certain cost with an uncertain salary, how many things outside your control must go right for the investment to make sense?

Run your own Cost & ROI numbers

B·J·N·T: What a Great University Actually Sells

Brand, Judgment, Network, Transformation. In the AI age, a university charging ₹3 crore for information alone is dead. You are paying for access, benchmark-shifting and rooms you'd otherwise enter at 42, not 22.

How we build admission strategy

The Five Removals

Remove the brochure, the logo, the people, the default and the job fantasy, and see whether the decision still stands. If the answer changes only when the name is revealed, you know how much is education and how much is brand.

Career counselling & career-fit assessment

Career Before Country

Don't pick the country first and force a career to fit. Start from the career endpoint. Then let the course, country and university follow from it.
