TIFR, for example, maintains faculty listings across its departments, while individual departments publish faculty research interests and email addresses. IISc departments likewise publish faculty information and research areas.
So the real advantage is not "having contacts."
It is knowing how to create a reason for a professor to reply.
Why Most Internship Emails Get Ignored
Search for "research internship for high school students", and you will find thousands of students asking essentially the same question:
"Dear Professor, I am a Class 11 student, and I am interested in research. Can you please give me an internship?"
There is nothing offensive about that email.
There is simply very little reason for a busy researcher to answer it.
A professor may receive messages from undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers, collaborators and prospective applicants. A generic internship request adds another task without demonstrating why the student is a potential fit.
The better approach is to reverse the order.
Do not begin by asking for an internship. Begin by demonstrating genuine interest in the professor's work.
That small change can transform the email from a request for a favour into the beginning of an academic conversation.
The Strategy: Curiosity First, Internship Second
The most useful principle is simple:
Curiosity opens the conversation. Begging closes it.
Instead of writing:
"I would like to do an internship under your guidance."
Write something closer to:
"I read your paper on [topic] and had a question about [specific point]."
Now the professor has something concrete to respond to.

The objective is not to find the most famous professor.

The student is not demanding laboratory access.
They are offering time.

Why This Email Works Better
Notice what the email does not say.
It does not say:
- "I am extremely passionate."
- "This internship is very important for my college admissions."
- "I want to study at your university."
- "Please give me an internship."
- "I am a hardworking and dedicated student."
- "My parents know people in your field."
Instead, it establishes three things quickly:
You read their work.
You have a genuine question.
You are offering to contribute in a limited, realistic way.
That is a much stronger starting point.
What Should Be Attached to the Email?
Only a one-page CV.
For a 16-year-old, the CV does not need to look like an adult professional résumé.
It can include:
Education
School, Class, academic interests and relevant subjects.
Academic achievements
Olympiads, competitions, strong grades or relevant coursework—but only where meaningful.
Projects
Personal coding projects, science experiments, independent research, data-analysis projects, essays or other work relevant to the professor's field.
Skills

Common App's guidance explicitly includes research and internship experiences among the activities students can report, along with the organisation, dates, role and description.

"Completed a prestigious research internship."
and
"Spent four months reviewing literature on X, cleaned a dataset, discussed findings with a researcher and produced a short report."
The second is much more informative.
Admissions officers are not simply counting the number of prestigious names on a résumé.
The stronger question is:
What did the student actually do, learn and contribute?
A genuine research experience can also lead to better questions, deeper academic interests, stronger projects and more credible recommendations.
And because application claims can be scrutinised, students should never exaggerate a research position, title, contribution or relationship with a professor.
A legitimate, modest experience is far more valuable than an impressive-sounding fictional one.
The Bigger Lesson:
Connections Are Not the Only Route
This is perhaps the most important lesson for students and parents.
Connections can certainly make opportunities easier to discover.
But the absence of connections does not mean the absence of opportunities.
A student can build an academic network by starting with publicly available information:
Institution → Faculty member → Research area → Paper → Question → Email → Conversation → Possible opportunity
That is a repeatable process.
It rewards initiative rather than family access.
