The problem is that a certificate does not automatically demonstrate initiative.

A student who spends six months solving a real problem, produces something tangible, finds actual users, measures results and learns from failure has a much more interesting story to tell than a student who simply attended an expensive internship.

This matters because selective colleges do not only ask, “What activities did you do?” They want to understand what a student actually did with their time, interests and opportunities. Common App, for example, asks students to report activities, work, hobbies, community engagement and responsibilities, including details such as years of participation, hours and leadership.

That creates an important distinction:

Participation is easy to buy. Ownership is not.

And ownership does not require a Mumbai office, a famous mentor, a family business or ₹15,000.

A student can start with a laptop, a notebook, a phone and an idea.

Before choosing a project, understand the pattern behind all five ideas.

A strong project usually contains four ingredients:

Real users or an audience.

Someone actually reads it, uses it, buys something, attends a class or contributes information.

You do not need a laboratory to conduct meaningful scientific work.

You need a question.

Public datasets can provide an extraordinary starting point. NASA publishes open datasets, while Data.gov provides hundreds of thousands of government datasets that can be used for research, applications and data visualisation.

A student interested in biology, environmental science, physics, astronomy, economics or public health can take publicly available information and investigate one narrowly defined question.

Step 1: Choose a subject, not a dataset.

Do not begin by downloading a giant spreadsheet.

Build one useful feature.
