5 Ways to Get Into an IIM Without CAT

Nearly 2.95 lakh candidates registered for CAT 2025. CAT remains the main route to the traditional two-year MBA at the IIMs. But it is not the only way to enter the IIM system.

Several IIMs now offer programmes that allow students to begin directly after Class 12, typically at 17 or 18, without taking CAT. There are also non-CAT options for experienced professionals.

Here are five important routes to know about.

1. IPMAT Indore

Programme: Five-Year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM)

Entrance test: IPMAT Indore

Eligibility: Class 12 passed/appearing, subject to the institute's academic and age requirements

Format: Full-time residential programme

Interview: Yes

IIM Indore's IPM allows students to enter an integrated management programme directly after Class 12.

The admission process includes the IPM Aptitude Test followed by a Personal Interview.

The IPMAT Indore score is also used by other IIMs, including IIM Ranchi, IIM Amritsar, IIM Shillong, IIM Sirmaur and IIM Sambalpur for their respective undergraduate management programmes. Each institute has its own application and selection process.

So, one entrance test can potentially open several IIM applications — but you must apply separately wherever required.

2. IIM Rohtak's IPM Aptitude Test

Programme: Five-Year Integrated Programme in Management

Entrance test: IIM Rohtak IPM Aptitude Test

Eligibility: Class 12 plus prescribed academic and age requirements

Format: Full-time campus-based programme

Interview: Yes

IIM Rohtak conducts its own IPM Aptitude Test, separate from IPMAT Indore.

The 2026 test included Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability. Shortlisted candidates were then called for a Personal Interview. Final selection considered the aptitude test, Class 10 and Class 12 performance, and the interview.

This is why students considering IPM should not assume that preparing for one exam automatically covers every IIM's admission process.

3. JIPMAT: IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya

Programme: Five-Year Integrated Programme in Management

Entrance test: JIPMAT

Eligibility: Class 12 plus the prescribed academic requirements

Format: Full-time residential programmes

Interview: No Personal Interview in the 2026 domestic admission process

JIPMAT — the Joint Integrated Programme in Management Admission Test — is conducted by the National Testing Agency for the IPM programmes at IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya.

IIM Jammu's 2026 admission policy used JIPMAT performance along with Class 10 and Class 12 marks to prepare the merit list.

IIM Bodh Gaya's 2026 policy similarly used JIPMAT scores for preparing the merit list after the prescribed sectional requirements were met.

Importantly, neither institute's 2026 domestic IPM admission process included a Personal Interview.

For students looking for a direct-after-Class-12 IIM route without an interview, JIPMAT is therefore one to know about.

4. IIM Bangalore's BBA in Digital Business and Entrepreneurship

Programme: BBA in Digital Business and Entrepreneurship

Entrance route: IIMB DBE Entrance Test, CUET General Aptitude Test or JEE Main

Eligibility: Class 12 with the prescribed requirements, including Mathematics in Class 10

Format: Online learning; examinations at physical centres

Interview: No interview in the 2026 admission process

IIM Bangalore's BBA in Digital Business and Entrepreneurship (BBA DBE) offers a very different way to enter the IIM system.

For the 2026 admission cycle, applicants could qualify through the IIMB DBE Entrance Test, CUET GAT or JEE Main.

The three-year degree is delivered online, while examinations are conducted offline at centres across India.

The 2026 selection was based entirely on performance in the applicable entrance examination; there was no interview stage.

5. One-Year IIM MBAs Through GMAT or GRE

This route is for experienced professionals.

Some IIMs offer one-year management programmes where candidates can use GMAT or GRE instead of CAT.

IIM Ahmedabad MBA-PGPX

Candidates for the 2027–28 batch need a bachelor's degree, a minimum age of 25, at least four years of full-time post-graduation work experience, and a valid GMAT or GRE score. Shortlisted candidates go through a Personal Interview.

IIM Bangalore EPGP

IIM Bangalore's EPGP is another one-year programme for experienced professionals. The institute's current admission information requires five years of work experience and a GMAT/GRE score.

So, for working professionals, the non-CAT route can begin with GMAT or GRE rather than CAT.

The IIM Undergraduate Landscape Is Expanding

These five routes are not the entire non-CAT picture.

IIMs are increasingly offering undergraduate programmes beyond the traditional IPM model.

IIM Kozhikode now offers a four-year Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS). Its 2026 process uses the IIMK BMS Aptitude Test, followed by a Personal Interview.

IIM Jammu has also introduced a BBA (Hons.) programme at its Leh/Ladakh campus, adding another undergraduate route to the IIM landscape.

IIM Bangalore also offers undergraduate B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes in areas including Economics and Data Sciences.

The bigger point is simple:

CAT is the main route to the traditional two-year IIM MBA. It is not the only route into an IIM programme.

What Should Students Do?

If you are still in school, don't automatically assume that your IIM journey has to begin with CAT after graduation.

Depending on your eligibility and interests, you can explore IPMAT Indore, IIM Rohtak's IPM Aptitude Test, JIPMAT, IIM Bangalore's BBA DBE and other undergraduate IIM programmes.

If you are already a graduate with substantial work experience, GMAT/GRE-based one-year programmes can offer another route.

The smarter approach is to start with the programme, then check its entrance test, eligibility, format and selection process.

That is how you find the right route — rather than assuming there is only one.
