Interview Format

Format

Optional alumni interview available through WPI's alumni network; also accepts virtual interviews and InitialView

Duration

30 minutes

Interviewers

Alumni volunteers, predominantly engineers and scientists who went through WPI's project-based curriculum

Interview Style & Expectations

Project-focused and practical. WPI's entire curriculum is built around the WPI Plan — projects, not exams. Interviewers want to hear about what you've done, not what you've memorized. Expect hands-on, problem-solving-oriented conversation.

What WPI Looks For

Project-based mindset — WPI students complete a Major Qualifying Project (MQP) and Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP)
Ability to work in teams and across disciplines
Real-world problem-solving orientation, not just academic achievement
Interest in WPI's unique 7-week term structure and project-based learning model

Sample Interview Questions

Academic

WPI's curriculum is built around projects, not exams. Tell me about a project where you solved a real-world problem.

Tip: This is your chance to shine. Describe the problem, your approach, your team role, and the outcome. WPI lives and breathes projects — make yours compelling.

Fit

The IQP (Interactive Qualifying Project) sends students worldwide to solve community problems using technology. Where would you want to go and what problem would you tackle?

Tip: Research actual IQP project centers — Bangkok, Namibia, Venice, Albania. Name a real location and a real type of problem. This shows you understand WPI's model.

What interests you about WPI's 7-week term structure and how it differs from a traditional semester?

Tip: The 7-week terms mean intense focus on fewer subjects at once. Show you understand this structure and why it appeals to your learning style.

Character

How do you handle working on a team where members have different skills and approaches?

Tip: WPI projects are always team-based and often interdisciplinary. Show you can collaborate, compromise, and leverage others' strengths.

Preparation Strategy

Do's - Preparation Tips

  • Understand the WPI Plan thoroughly — MQP, IQP, Sufficiency, and the 7-week terms are what make WPI unique.
  • Have at least one strong project story ready to discuss in detail — this is the currency of WPI conversations.
  • Research the global project centers for IQP — WPI has 50+ locations worldwide and this is a major selling point.
  • WPI is collaborative, not cutthroat. Show that you lift others up, not just yourself.

Don'ts - Common Mistakes

  • Not knowing what MQP and IQP stand for or how they work — this is WPI's defining feature
  • Talking only about individual academic achievements without mentioning teamwork or projects
  • Treating WPI as 'just another engineering school' without understanding the project-based model that sets it apart
