University of Nottingham Interview Preparation

Master the interview process with expert tips, sample questions, and proven strategies from Dr. Karan Gupta

Interview Format

Format

Nottingham does NOT interview for most undergraduate programmes — admissions are UCAS-based. Exceptions: Medicine (MMI format), Nursing/Midwifery, Veterinary Medicine, and some Education programmes. Nottingham has a large, green campus and is a strong Russell Group research university. For postgraduate taught programmes, most admit on application; MBA (Nottingham University Business School) may interview.

Duration

Medicine MMI: approximately 60 minutes. Vet Medicine: similar MMI format. Healthcare interviews: 20-30 minutes.

Interviewers

Medicine/Vet MMI: trained assessors. Healthcare: programme panels. MBA: admissions team.

Interview Style & Expectations

Approachable and supportive. Nottingham has a reputation for excellent student experience alongside strong research. The interview/assessment culture (where it exists) is fair and well-structured.

What Nottingham Looks For

Strong academic profile meeting published requirements
Genuine subject interest demonstrated through personal statement
For Medicine/Vet: empathy, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and relevant experience

Balance between academic ability and personal qualities

Sample Interview Questions

Fit

Why Nottingham for your chosen subject?

Tip: Reference specific modules, research groups, or the campus environment. Nottingham has strengths — show you know them.

Values (Medicine)

Medicine MMI: What qualities make a good doctor?

Tip: Go beyond 'empathy and communication.' Include resilience, lifelong learning, teamwork, and cultural competence. Use examples.

Teamwork

Tell us about a time you worked effectively in a team.

Tip: Be specific. Describe your role, the challenge, and what you contributed. Don't claim to have done everything yourself.

Awareness

What do you think are the biggest issues facing your field today?

Tip: Show current awareness. Reference recent developments, policy changes, or research breakthroughs.

Resilience

How do you handle academic setbacks or failure?

Tip: Be honest about a real setback and what you learned from it. Nottingham values self-awareness.

Preparation Strategy

Do's - Preparation Tips

  • For most Nottingham programmes, your personal statement is your entire admissions case — treat it accordingly
  • Nottingham's campus (University Park) is one of the most beautiful in the UK — if you've visited, mention it; if not, research it
  • Nottingham has particular strengths in Pharmacy, Engineering, and Sciences — reference relevant department achievements
  • The city of Nottingham is affordable and student-friendly — showing awareness of the location is a plus
  • For Medicine/Vet: Nottingham's MMIs are thorough but supportive; practise with structured stations
  • Nottingham has global campuses (Malaysia, China) — if international perspective matters to you, mention this

Don'ts - Common Mistakes

  • Preparing for an interview that doesn't exist for your programme
  • Writing a generic personal statement without Nottingham-specific content
  • Confusing Nottingham with Nottingham Trent University — they are separate institutions
  • Not checking campus location — some programmes are at other sites (Sutton Bonington for Vet/Agriculture)
  • Underestimating Nottingham's competitiveness for popular programmes
  • For Medicine: insufficient clinical experience — Nottingham expects meaningful, reflective engagement with healthcare
