Interview Format
Format
Leeds does NOT interview for most undergraduate programmes — admissions are UCAS-based. Exceptions: Medicine (MMI format), Dentistry (MMI), some Healthcare programmes, Social Work, and a few programmes with portfolio requirements. Leeds is one of the largest Russell Group universities with a wide range of programmes. For postgraduate taught programmes, most admit on application; some professional and competitive programmes may interview.
Duration
Medicine/Dentistry MMI: approximately 60 minutes. Healthcare programme interviews: 20-30 minutes. Postgraduate (where applicable): 20-30 minutes.
Interviewers
MMI: trained assessors. Healthcare: programme panel. Postgraduate: departmental academics.
Interview Style & Expectations
Straightforward and inclusive. Leeds is a large, diverse university that values academic ability and genuine motivation. The interview/assessment style (where it exists) is professional and structured, without being intimidating.
What Leeds Looks For
Sample Interview Questions
Motivation
What motivated you to choose this particular subject?
Tip: Be genuine and specific. Leeds values authenticity — connect your interest to real experiences.
Ethics (Medicine)
Medicine MMI: You are a junior doctor and you suspect a colleague is not washing their hands between patients. What do you do?
Tip: Patient safety first, but approach the colleague professionally. Show understanding of escalation pathways and why hand hygiene matters.
Self-Awareness
What skills do you hope to develop during your degree?
Tip: Show you understand what the programme offers beyond knowledge — critical thinking, research skills, professional competencies.
Readiness
How do you think you'll adapt to university-level independent study?
Tip: Give concrete examples of self-directed learning you've already done. Leeds is large — self-motivation matters.
Research
What do you know about the University of Leeds?
Tip: Mention specific departments, research centres, or programme features. Leeds has too many strengths to rely on generic answers.
Preparation Strategy
Do's - Preparation Tips
- For most programmes, your UCAS personal statement IS your admissions case at Leeds — no interview opportunity to redeem a weak statement
- Leeds is a large university with enormous programme variety — show you've chosen your specific programme deliberately
- Leeds has particular strengths in Engineering, Sciences, Business, and the Arts — reference relevant departmental achievements
- The city of Leeds is a significant draw (affordable, vibrant, strong graduate job market) — mentioning it shows genuine research
- For Medicine: Leeds uses BMAT/UCAT scores; check which test applies and prepare accordingly
- Leeds offers extensive study abroad and industrial placement options — mention these if they appeal to you
Don'ts - Common Mistakes
- Assuming Leeds interviews for standard programmes — most admissions are purely application-based
- Writing a one-size-fits-all personal statement without Leeds-specific content
- Underestimating the competitiveness of popular Leeds programmes (Medicine, Law, Business)
- Not researching Leeds' specific entry requirements — they vary significantly between departments
- For international students: not factoring in Leeds' Northern England location when planning (it's not London prices, which is good)
- Focusing too much on the city and not enough on the academic programme in your personal statement
