Syracuse University Interview Preparation

Master the interview process with expert tips, sample questions, and proven strategies from Dr. Karan Gupta

Interview Format

Format

Optional alumni interview available in select cities; Syracuse also offers campus visit interviews with admissions counselors

Duration

30 minutes

Interviewers

Alumni volunteers or admissions counselors (campus visits); Newhouse and other competitive programs may have portfolio reviews instead

Interview Style & Expectations

Enthusiastic and school-spirit-driven. Syracuse interviewers are passionate about their school and want to see that same energy from you. For Newhouse (communications) applicants, expect more portfolio/work-focused discussion.

What Syracuse Looks For

Passion for your chosen field — Syracuse has strong identity programs (Newhouse, Maxwell, Whitman)
School spirit and genuine excitement about the Syracuse experience
Creative thinking and communication skills, especially for media/communications applicants
Resilience and independence — Syracuse winters and distance from major cities test commitment

Sample Interview Questions

Fit

Syracuse has very distinct schools — Newhouse, Maxwell, Whitman, the College of Engineering. Why did you choose your specific school and program?

Tip: This is the most important question. Know your school's reputation, faculty, and signature programs. 'I like communications' is not enough for Newhouse.

Syracuse has a strong campus culture — from sports to student media to Greek life. How do you see yourself fitting in?

Tip: Research specific organizations: WAER radio, The Daily Orange, Otto's Army, Cuse Culture. Syracuse students are intensely involved.

Academic

Tell me about a creative project, publication, broadcast, or piece of work you're proud of.

Tip: Especially for Newhouse applicants — bring examples. For other schools, show creative or entrepreneurial thinking in your field.

Character

How do you handle being far from home or in a challenging environment?

Tip: Syracuse is in central New York with serious winters. Show you're resilient and excited about the experience, not just tolerating the location.

Preparation Strategy

Do's - Preparation Tips

  • If applying to Newhouse, prepare your portfolio or media samples — this matters more than the interview itself.
  • Know the difference between Syracuse's schools and don't confuse them. Maxwell (citizenship/public affairs) is not Whitman (business).
  • Syracuse alumni are famously loyal — your interviewer likely bleeds Orange. Match that energy authentically.
  • Mention specific Syracuse traditions, programs, or professors that excite you.

Don'ts - Common Mistakes

  • Applying to Newhouse without a portfolio or concrete media experience to discuss
  • Being unable to articulate why Syracuse over other schools with similar programs
  • Showing no awareness of Syracuse's campus culture, traditions, or student life beyond academics
