Lancaster University Interview Preparation
Master the interview process with expert tips, sample questions, and proven strategies from Dr. Karan Gupta
Interview Format
Format
Lancaster does NOT conduct interviews for the vast majority of undergraduate or postgraduate taught programmes. Admissions are UCAS-based for undergraduates (personal statement, predicted grades, references) and application-based for postgraduates. Exceptions: Medicine (MMI format, jointly delivered with Lancaster Medical School), some creative arts programmes (portfolio + discussion), and PhD applicants (supervisor interview). Lancaster's collegiate system, like Durham's, does NOT involve college admissions interviews.
Duration
Medicine MMI: approximately 60 minutes across multiple stations. PhD interviews: 20-30 minutes. Creative arts discussions: 15-20 minutes.
Interviewers
Medicine: trained MMI assessors. PhD: prospective supervisor plus departmental representative. Creative arts: programme tutors.
Interview Style & Expectations
Lancaster is research-intensive but approachable. The culture values interdisciplinary thinking, practical application, and genuine intellectual curiosity. Less formal than Oxbridge or Durham — more about what you think than how you present it.

Preparation Strategy
Do's - Preparation Tips
- Focus your energy on your UCAS personal statement — for most Lancaster programmes, this is your entire admissions case
- Lancaster has a strong reputation for certain subjects (Linguistics, Environmental Science, Business) — reference specific departmental strengths
- The campus is self-contained and rural — show you understand and welcome this environment
- For postgraduate applicants: Lancaster's research output is excellent; mention specific research groups or centres that align with your interests
- Lancaster offers generous scholarships for international students — mention these in your application if relevant
- Check if your programme has any additional requirements (e.g. LNAT for Law, portfolio for Design)
Don'ts - Common Mistakes
- Preparing for an interview that doesn't exist — most Lancaster admissions are purely application-based
- Overlooking Lancaster because it's not in a major city — it consistently ranks in the UK Top 15
- Writing a personal statement that's too generic or focused on activities rather than academic depth
- Not checking programme-specific requirements (some have admissions tests or portfolio requirements)
- For international students: not demonstrating English language proficiency clearly in the application
- Ignoring Lancaster's collegiate system in your application — understanding it shows genuine research
