Being featured on the cover of Femina, a prestigious publication under the Times of India umbrella, was a humbling and exhilarating experience, not just because of the recognition it bestowed upon me, but because it provided me an opportunity to further the dialogue on education and empowerment—topics I am deeply passionate about.

The piece highlighted my work in championing education and women’s empowerment, issues that are tightly woven into my professional ethos. This feature is a reflection of a broader trend I’ve observed over my nearly three decades as an education consultant: the growing recognition of education as a catalyst for social change, particularly for women. In India, education has long been hailed as a pathway out of poverty, but it is increasingly being seen as instrumental in achieving gender equality—a shift I wholeheartedly support.

Over the years, I’ve noticed an interesting pattern. When I first started advising students on overseas education, there was a heavier skew toward engineering and technical fields. Parents often influenced these choices, driven by dreams of stable and prestigious careers for their children. However, I’ve witnessed a significant shift. Increasingly, students are choosing fields driven by passion rather than convention—from arts and humanities to social sciences and sustainable development. This shift has been particularly pronounced among young women, who are pushing boundaries and redefining success on their own terms.

Last year, I had a student, Priya, who embodied this change. Coming from a conservative background, her family had predetermined a path for her: engineering, then maybe an MBA. But Priya was interested in environmental studies and passionate about tackling climate change. She feared her family’s disapproval but was resolute. With guidance and a detailed plan, we presented her aspirations to her parents as tangible and viable. Seeing her determination and the potential for a fulfilling career with societal impact, her parents came around. Priya is now thriving at one of the leading universities known for its environmental programs and has even secured an internship with an international NGO focusing on sustainability.

This anecdote highlights the power of persistence and clarity of vision. It’s about knowing what you love and not being afraid to pursue it, while also equipping oneself with the right information and backing. In every consultation, I emphasize to students and their parents the importance of grounding educational choices in passion and aptitude. A future built on interest and enthusiasm often leads to greater fulfillment and success.

Parents often worry about the unconventional paths their children choose, concerned about job security and financial stability. While these concerns are valid, we live in an era where careers take many forms and paths. The gig economy, entrepreneurial ventures, and careers in areas like digital media and sustainable living are more viable now than ever. The future is flexible, and the skills of adaptability, continuous learning, and emotional intelligence are as critical as technical prowess. Thus, parents should encourage their children to explore broader horizons, reassessing and redefining notions of stability and success.

Education is no longer confined to the acquisition of rigid skills but is about fostering a mindset open to diverse possibilities. In my practice, I elucidate the diverse options which students can explore. Exploring disciplines they are passionate about can lead to remarkable innovation and impact. For instance, a student who delves into international relations might use her education to work on global gender parity initiatives; another in digital arts might create compelling content that challenges societal norms and inspires change. The scope of what can be achieved is vast and promising.

From a pragmatic standpoint, students should undertake thorough research when considering overseas education. They should seek institutions that not only boast academic rigor but also align with their values. A critical part of my consultation process involves mentoring students on identifying such institutions—be it through their syllabi, extracurricular opportunities, or even their community outreach programs.

To parents and students fretting over these decisions, I advise setting up a roadmap. Understand your interests and strengths. Research and align your career goals with your values. Engage in open, honest dialogue with one another and be prepared to adjust your sails as needed. Creating a flexible plan that accommodates both aspirations and practicalities can pave the way for a fulfilling educational journey.

Reflecting on the feature in Femina, my role as both an educator and an advocate for women's empowerment feels reaffirmed. Educational opportunities not only shape individual futures but also construct a more equal and informed society. The narratives we create—each successful female scientist, entrepreneur, and changemaker—chip away at centuries-old barriers. As we move forward, expanding accessibility to education across genders and backgrounds must remain a priority. Encouraging our daughters, sisters, and nieces to chase their dreams, not out of a need to fit into predetermined molds, but as architects of their destinies, is where true empowerment lies.

The world is more interconnected than ever, and with that comes the chance to influence global tides through wherever we are. Education is the bridge we all must cross, and it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that bridge is built on strong, inclusive, and secure foundations. Being featured in a magazine might seem like a personal milestone, but it’s much more. It’s a moment to advocate for access to that bridge for every student, regardless of gender or background, and to encourage them to chart the course that feels most authentic to them. As we strive toward this vision, I urge parents and students alike to embrace this evolving landscape with optimism and resolve. Let’s educate to empower, for a brighter and more equitable tomorrow.
