Having guided numerous students through their international education journeys, I've seen firsthand the complexities Indian students face when adapting to life abroad. The recent study on racism and exclusion in Canada underscores challenges that require thorough consideration and proactive planning. Indian students, particularly those new to these experiences, need to understand that while Canada remains a favorable destination due to its welcoming reputation, issues of racism and cultural adaptation can't be overlooked. My advice to students and their families is to delve deeply into the cultural climate and inclusivity policies of prospective universities. Engage with current students and alumni to gather authentic insights about their on-ground experiences. Universities may enhance their support systems, but being well-prepared individually is crucial. Students should also actively cultivate networks with supportive communities once they arrive, which can provide a sense of belonging and security. Awareness of institutional mechanisms in place to protect students' rights is fundamental. In some cases, choosing cities or campuses with a higher concentration of a diverse student body can alleviate the transition. Ultimately, while systemic issues may take time to address fully, informed choices can help mitigate adverse experiences and promote a positive educational journey in Canada.
