GCCs in India: 2,117 centres, 2.36 million jobs
Global Capability Centres are now the single biggest reason an Indian student can build an international career without leaving India, and the reason a foreign degree is worth more at home than it was a decade ago. Here is what the sector actually looks like in 2026, and what it changes for students and parents.

What a GCC actually is
A Global Capability Centre is a multinational's own office in India, staffed by its own employees, doing work for the company's global business. It is not an outsourcing vendor and it is not a back office in the old sense.
The distinction that matters for a career: in an IT services company you are billed to a client and your work is defined by a contract. In a GCC you are employed by the brand itself, and the work is the company's own product, platform or global function. That changes what you build, who you report to, and how far the role can travel.
It has also changed what these centres do. Twenty years ago the pitch was cost. Today 39% of India's GCCs own products and platforms end to end, and a small leading group runs global mandates from India outright.
Not every GCC is the same. And this is the part that matters most
Zinnov classifies India's centres into four tiers. Two candidates can both say “I work at a GCC” and be doing completely different jobs. Before you accept an offer, work out which tier you are joining.

Where India's GCCs are
Bengaluru
The largest market by some distance, over 29% of India's GCC units and more than a third of its GCC workforce. 5.36 million sq ft of GCC office leasing in H1 2026 alone.
Delhi NCR
Over 490 units. Gurugram and Noida dominate, with strong financial services, consulting and analytics presence. 2.37 million sq ft leased in H1 2026.
Hyderabad
The fastest-rising challenger to Bengaluru, especially in product engineering and pharma. GCCs took 37% of the city's Q2 2026 office leasing.
Pune
Second only to Bengaluru on H1 2026 leasing at 3.01 million sq ft. Automotive, engineering R&D and BFSI are the anchors.
Chennai
GCCs claimed a record 51% of the city's office leasing in H1 2026, the highest share of any Indian city. Strong in engineering, insurance and healthcare.
Mumbai
2.23 million sq ft leased in H1 2026. Banking, insurance and capital-markets capability centres concentrate here.

What the GCC boom changes for Indian students
Studying abroad and working in India are no longer opposite choices
For years the assumption was that you went abroad to stay abroad, and coming home meant accepting a smaller career. A GCC is a global company's India office hiring against global standards. An international degree, and the experience of having worked and studied in another system, is directly useful there.
It de-risks the tightening visa picture
The UK's Graduate Route drops to 18 months for applications from January 2027, Canada has cut study permits and narrowed post-study work eligibility, and the US H-1B now uses wage-weighted selection that disadvantages entry-level applicants. It should change what you study, not just where
India is currently the world's largest market for AI hiring, and GCC demand is concentrated in engineering, data, product, design, finance and risk. A degree chosen for its brand alone travels less well than one chosen for the capability it builds. That is the conversation we have in the first consultation.
Three things nobody tells you about GCC careers
- The label means little on its own. 13% of India's centres are still pure cost centres. Ask in the interview what decisions are made in India and what has to be signed off overseas.
- Pay varies enormously. Market reports put entry-level GCC packages well above typical IT-services bands, and senior roles at the best-known centres far higher again. But these are market estimates across very different employers, not a published scale. Treat any single number you read online with suspicion.
- The growth is real but not infinite. The sector has grown 32% in five years and is forecast to keep growing, yet it remains concentrated in six cities and a handful of functions. If your field is outside them, the boom may not apply to you.

Which Indian cities have the most GCCs?
Bengaluru leads with more than 29% of India's GCC units and over a third of the country's GCC workforce. Delhi NCR follows with over 490 units, then Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Mumbai. Those six cities account for the overwhelming majority of centres. On office leasing, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai together took close to 80% of GCC space in the first half of 2026, while Chennai saw GCCs claim a record 51% of all its leasing.

An international degree, exposure to how work is done abroad, and the ability to operate across time zones and cultures are directly relevant here in a way they are not at every Indian employer. Studying abroad and building a career in India are no longer opposite choices.
Is a GCC job in India a good career for a returning student?
For many students, yes. It is the pathway that lets you use an international degree without staying overseas, increasingly relevant as post-study work rules tighten in the UK, Canada and Australia. The honest caveat is that not every GCC role is a global role: 13% of India's centres are still pure cost-arbitrage 'outposts', while 39% have moved to end-to-end ownership and 5% run global mandates. Which centre you join matters more than the fact that it is a GCC.
Which companies have GCCs in India?
506 of the Forbes Global 2000 do, spanning banking and financial services, technology, retail, pharmaceuticals, automotive, energy and professional services. Rather than relying on a list that dates quickly, search for the company you are interested in plus the city (for example 'Bengaluru' or 'Hyderabad') on its own careers site, and check whether the India role is scoped globally or locally.
