Student Discounts Abroad: Transportation, Software, and Shopping Deals for Indian Students

Student Discounts Abroad: Transportation, Software, and Shopping Deals for Indian Students
Here is something no university orientation tells you but every international student figures out within weeks: your student ID is a discount card. A very powerful one. And Indian students, who are already stretching every rupee across unfavorable exchange rates, need to squeeze every possible saving out of their student status.
The discounts available to enrolled students abroad are not trivial. We are talking about free software worth hundreds of dollars, transport passes that cut commuting costs in half, streaming services at a fraction of the regular price, and retail discounts that genuinely add up. Over a two-year master's program, a student who systematically uses these discounts can save USD 2,000-5,000 compared to one who does not.
This guide covers everything by category, with specific programs, prices, and how to access them.
The ISIC Card: Your Universal Student Discount Key
Before we get into specific discounts, start with the International Student Identity Card. The ISIC is the only internationally recognized proof of student status, accepted in over 130 countries by more than 150,000 merchants and institutions.
Cost: Approximately USD 20-25 (or the local equivalent). Some universities issue it automatically; others require you to apply through the ISIC website or authorized agents.
What it gets you: The ISIC provides discounts on flights (up to 40% off with STA Travel and partner airlines), train travel (Eurail passes), museums and cultural sites (free or 50% off at hundreds of museums worldwide), software and technology (Adobe, Microsoft, and others), accommodation (hostels, hotels), food and dining, and retail shopping. The card is valid for one academic year (September to December of the following year) and needs annual renewal.
How to get it: Apply online at isic.org with your university admission letter or enrollment proof, a passport photo, and payment. You can also apply through your university's international student office. The physical card arrives in 1-2 weeks; a digital version is available immediately via the ISIC app.
Pro tip for Indian students: Get your ISIC before departure. It works from the moment you are enrolled, even before classes start, and the travel discounts alone during your initial flight and setup period can cover the card's cost multiple times over.
Transportation Discounts by Country
Transport is typically the second or third largest monthly expense for students abroad after rent and food. Fortunately, almost every major city offers student-specific transport passes at significant discounts.
United Kingdom
Student Oyster Card (London): Apply through Transport for London with your university enrollment letter. Gives you 30% off adult-rate Travelcards and Bus and Tram season tickets. For a student commuting across zones 1-3 daily, this saves approximately GBP 40-60 per month, or GBP 500-700 per year. The application requires a passport photo and takes about 4 weeks, so apply immediately after enrollment.
16-25 Railcard: Costs GBP 30 per year and gives you one-third off most rail fares across the UK. Even if you only take a few weekend trips (London to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham), this card pays for itself in a single journey. International students under 25 are eligible, and those over 25 can get a 26-30 Railcard for the same price and discount.
Coach travel: National Express and Megabus offer student discounts of 15-30%. The National Express Young Persons Coachcard costs GBP 12.50 per year for one-third off coach fares.
Germany
Semesterticket: This is one of the best student transport deals in the world. Included in your semester fees (typically EUR 200-350 per semester), the Semesterticket gives you unlimited travel on all regional buses, trams, S-Bahn, and sometimes regional trains within your university's transport zone. In cities like Berlin, Munich, or Frankfurt, this replaces a monthly transit pass that would otherwise cost EUR 80-100 per month. Over a two-year master's, you save EUR 1,200-1,800.
Deutschland-Ticket: At EUR 49 per month (as of 2025), this covers all local and regional public transport nationwide. Some universities integrate this into the Semesterticket at a subsidized rate. Check with your university's student services.
BahnCard 25 or 50: For long-distance ICE trains, the BahnCard 25 (EUR 35.90 for students under 27) gives 25% off all tickets, and the BahnCard 50 (EUR 69.90) gives 50% off. If you travel between cities regularly (visiting friends at other universities, weekend trips), the BahnCard 50 pays for itself in 2-3 round trips.
France
Navigo Imagine R: The student version of Paris's Navigo transit pass costs approximately EUR 38.45 per month (compared to EUR 86.40 for a regular Navigo Mois). It covers unlimited travel on Metro, RER, bus, and tram within the Ile-de-France region. Annual saving: approximately EUR 575. Apply through the Imagine R website with your university enrollment certificate.
SNCF Carte Avantage Jeune: Costs EUR 49 per year and gives 25-30% off TGV and Intercity trains for travelers under 28. Perfect for weekend getaways to Lyon, Marseille, or Bordeaux.
United States
University transit passes: Many US universities have partnerships with local transit agencies. Examples include the UPass at universities in Chicago (free CTA access), the MIT/Harvard combo pass in Boston (subsidized MBTA), and university-funded VTA passes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Check your university's transportation office immediately after enrollment.
Amtrak student discount: 15% off Amtrak train tickets with a valid student ID, available for travelers aged 13-25. Book through the Amtrak app or website and select the student discount fare.
Ride-sharing: Uber and Lyft do not offer permanent student discounts, but frequently send targeted promo codes to users near university campuses. Sign up with your university email to be eligible.
Canada
U-Pass (Universal Transit Pass): Mandatory at many Canadian universities and included in tuition fees. Provides unlimited transit in your city: TransLink in Vancouver (saving approximately CAD 100 per month), TTC in Toronto, OC Transpo in Ottawa. The annual cost (CAD 200-400 bundled in fees) versus regular monthly passes (CAD 100-150) makes this an exceptional value.
VIA Rail student discount: 25-40% off VIA Rail tickets for students with a valid ISIC card or university ID. The Toronto-Montreal corridor is particularly popular for weekend trips.
Australia
Concession Opal Card (Sydney): International students in NSW can apply for a concession Opal card, giving approximately 50% off public transport fares. This requires a Transport Concession Entitlement Card from your university.
myki Student Pass (Melbourne): Similar 50% concession on trams, trains, and buses in Melbourne. Application through PTV with your university enrollment confirmation.
Software and Technology Discounts
This is where student discounts get genuinely impressive. The software you get for free or at massive discounts as a student would cost hundreds or thousands of dollars at retail prices.
Microsoft Office 365 Education: Free. Completely free. Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, and 1TB of OneDrive storage. Access it at education.microsoft.com with your university email. This alone saves you USD 100 per year compared to a personal Microsoft 365 subscription.
Apple Education Pricing: Available at apple.com/education. Saves 10-15% on Mac computers and iPads. A MacBook Air that retails for USD 1,199 costs USD 1,099 with education pricing. During the annual back-to-school promotion (typically July-September), Apple adds free AirPods (worth USD 129-249) to education purchases. Combined saving: USD 200-400 on a laptop purchase. You need a valid university email to access the education store.
Adobe Creative Cloud: The student plan costs approximately USD 20 per month (compared to USD 55 per month for the all-apps plan). This includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, and 20+ other apps. Annual saving: USD 420. Essential for design, media, and architecture students.
GitHub Student Developer Pack: Free for students. Includes GitHub Pro, USD 100 in DigitalOcean credits, free domains from Namecheap, JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm worth USD 250+ each), Canva Pro, and over 100 other developer tools. Total value exceeds USD 2,000. Apply at education.github.com with your university email. Approval typically takes 1-2 days.
Notion: The Personal Pro plan (normally USD 10 per month) is free for students with a university email. Unlimited file uploads, version history, and API access.
Figma: Free for students. The professional plan (normally USD 15 per user per month) is available at no cost for enrolled students. Essential for UX/UI design students.
AutoCAD and Autodesk products: Free educational licenses for all Autodesk products including AutoCAD, Revit, Maya, and 3ds Max. These licenses are valid for 1-3 years and include full professional features. Retail cost of AutoCAD alone: USD 1,865 per year.
MATLAB: Many universities include MATLAB licenses in their IT services. If not, student licenses cost approximately USD 49 (compared to USD 940 for commercial). Check your university's software portal first.
Streaming and Entertainment
Spotify Student: Available in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, and 60+ other countries. Costs approximately 50% less than the regular premium plan: USD 5.99 per month in the US (vs USD 11.99), GBP 5.99 in the UK (vs GBP 10.99). In the US, the student plan includes Hulu (with ads) and Showtime at no extra cost. Verification through SheerID using your university email.
Apple Music Student: USD 5.99 per month (vs USD 10.99 regular). Includes Apple TV+ at no additional cost. Available globally. Verify through UNiDAYS.
YouTube Premium Student: USD 7.99 per month (vs USD 13.99). Includes ad-free YouTube, YouTube Music Premium, and background play. Available in the US, UK, Australia, and select countries.
Amazon Prime Student: This is one of the best overall student deals. 50% off regular Prime: USD 7.49 per month or USD 69 per year in the US, GBP 4.49 per month in the UK. Includes free same-day/one-day shipping, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and Prime Gaming. The first 6 months are free. Register with your university email (.edu in the US, .ac.uk in the UK).
Museums, Galleries, and Cultural Sites
If you are in Europe especially, your student ID is essentially a cultural passport. Many of the world's greatest museums and galleries are free or heavily discounted for students.
Free admission: All UK national museums (British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, V&A, Science Museum) are free for everyone. Most French national museums (Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou) are free for EU residents under 26 and discounted for international students. German state museums often offer free or EUR 1 admission on specific days for students.
Discounted admission: With a student ID or ISIC card, expect 25-50% off at most paid museums, galleries, and historical sites across Europe, North America, and Australia. This includes the Colosseum in Rome (EUR 2 vs EUR 16), the Alhambra in Spain (discounted entry), and most US national parks (free with an annual pass if you volunteer 250+ hours).
Travel Discounts
Eurail Pass (European train travel): Student discounts of up to 20% off Eurail Global and One Country passes. A one-month Global Pass allowing unlimited travel across 33 European countries starts at approximately EUR 400 for youth (under 28). This is the most cost-effective way to explore Europe during semester breaks.
Student flights: StudentUniverse and STA Travel offer exclusive flight deals for students, typically 10-30% off economy fares and up to 50% off business class. Book through their websites or apps with your ISIC or university ID verification. These savings are particularly significant on long-haul flights between India and your study destination.
Hostels: Hostelling International (HI) members get 10-15% off at 3,000+ hostels worldwide. The membership costs approximately USD 18-28 per year. Combined with Hostelworld and Booking.com student promo codes, accommodation costs during travel drop substantially.
Country-Specific Shopping and Retail Deals
UK: TOTUM card (GBP 14.99 per year) gives discounts at 350+ brands including ASOS (10%), Domino's (35%), Myprotein (40%), and Co-op (10%). UNiDAYS (free) covers Apple, Samsung, Nike, Adidas, and hundreds of online retailers.
US: Most major retailers offer 10-20% student discounts: J.Crew (15%), Madewell (15%), Nike (10%), Adidas (30%), Samsung (education pricing), Lenovo (up to 30%), and Dell (varies). Show your university ID at checkout or verify through UNiDAYS/Student Beans online.
Germany: Studentenrabatt is the local term for student discounts. Major savings at IKEA (student offers), MediaMarkt (education pricing on electronics), and through portal sites like Studententarife.org that aggregate current deals.
Canada: SPC Card (Student Price Card, CAD 12 per year) gives 10-25% off at hundreds of Canadian retailers including Aldo, Banana Republic, Burger King, Best Buy, and Foot Locker.
Australia: UNiDAYS covers major Australian retailers. Additionally, international students get GST (Goods and Services Tax, 10%) refunds on purchases over AUD 300 through the Tourist Refund Scheme when leaving the country.
How to Maximize Your Student Discounts: A System
Knowing about these discounts is one thing. Actually capturing them consistently is another. Here is a system that works.
Step 1: Get your credentials ready. Within your first week, obtain your physical student ID, register your university email, apply for an ISIC card, sign up for UNiDAYS, Student Beans, and your country-specific discount platform (TOTUM in UK, SPC in Canada).
Step 2: Claim all free software immediately. In your first weekend, set up Microsoft 365, GitHub Student Pack, Notion, Figma, and any field-specific free software. These are time-limited to your enrollment, so use them from day one.
Step 3: Set up your transport pass. This should be done in your first week. The monthly savings are significant and start accumulating immediately.
Step 4: Switch subscriptions to student plans. Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium. Do this in the first month. The annual savings across all these subscriptions: USD 150-300.
Step 5: Always ask. Before any purchase, whether it is a haircut, a museum ticket, a gym membership, or a restaurant meal, ask if there is a student discount. You will be surprised how often the answer is yes.
The cumulative impact is significant. A student who systematically uses every available discount can save USD 2,000-5,000 over a two-year program. That is not a rounding error. That is a round-trip flight to India.
