Study in Australia

Study in Australia

Written by Overseas Education Consultant and Study Abroad Career Counsellor in Mumbai, Karan Gupta

“I visited Australia for a holiday with my parents and after seeing the universities, I was sure that I would pursue my higher education there. I have been here for over 3 years now and am enjoying every moment of my time here,” states Ankit a student studying at the University of Melbourne. Australia boasts to be third largest English speaking destination for international students (the US and UK being the first two). The Australian education system is similar to India and students can complete Bachelor’s degrees in three years and Master’s degrees in usually two years. The tuition fees of Australian universities vary from A$10000 to A$40000 per annum (some universities may charge higher fees). You can work for 20 hours per week on campus while studying in an Australian institution. Even though you may not get permission to work immediately after you graduate, you can apply to work in Australia through the skilled migration programme.

For admissions to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes students need the IELTS only. Having a SAT or GRE score respectively may not enhance your profile. For MBA programmes students should appear for the GMAT preparation as well as the IELTS exam.

“Australia is an internationally recognised source of high quality education as well as research excellence. Our universities, vocational education and training colleges and schools are world- class. And Australia is a world leader in English language courses for international students. Australian Government legislation requires quality assurance agencies and codes of conduct to be in place so that international students in Australia and their parents enjoy a level of service and financial protection that is unrivalled. Multicultural Australia is a safe, friendly, sophisticated, and harmonious society in which students can learn and travel in an English speaking country. Australia also offers excellent value for money and a high standard of living,” states the Australian Government website.

Australia Visa

The student visa for Australia is very time consuming and students should apply for the visa 3 months prior to the course start date. Besides an exhaustive list of documents, students will need to undergo health tests as well. In most cases an interview is not required. You would have to include papers that show your financial standing, how you plan to pay for your education, why you wish to study in Australia and your plans after graduation. All your previous mark sheets and degrees will also be needed. In addition to this, for the study visa to Australia you will need to show an acceptable IELTS score.

Pre-departure information

Vaccinations: You should take the MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) vaccination before you leave for Australia. In any case you will need to clear medical requirements before you are granted a student visa. This includes a chest x-ray and many times blood tests as well. Other useful vaccinations include Hepatitis B, Meningitis, Diphtheria, and Tetanus. You can take these vaccinations from any registered doctor or hospital. However, it’s best to take the vaccinations from a doctor who understands Australia’s student medical requirements.
