IIM Mumbai’s New Bachelor’s Degree: BS in Digital Sciences and Business Management

The IIM system is finally moving seriously into the undergraduate space, and IIM Mumbai is joining that club in a very interesting way.IIM Mumbai (earlier NITIE) is set to launch its first-ever undergraduate degree – a four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) in Digital Sciences and Business Management. This program is designed for Class 12 students who want a serious management education and deep exposure to emerging technologies like AI, Machine Learning, Data Science and Blockchain – not just as “buzzwords,” but as part of their core training.

What exactly is this new UG program?

According to multiple counselling and exam-prep platforms summarising a Times of India report, the new undergraduate offering at IIM Mumbai will be:

  • Degree name: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Digital Sciences and Business Management

  • Duration: 4 years, full-time

  • Planned launch: Academic year starting July 2026

  • Who it’s for: Students finishing Class 12 who want a tech-integrated management degree

  • Academic focus:

    • Core management foundations – finance, marketing, operations, strategy

    • Strong technology layer – AI, Machine Learning, IoT, Blockchain, Data Science, Automation / Hyper-automation

The stated idea is to produce managers who are comfortable with code, data, and digital systems, not only with balance sheets and PowerPoints.

Where will the program run? Pune first, then Mumbai

The first batches are expected to start at IIM Mumbai’s satellite campus in Pune, not at the traditional Powai campus.

Broadly:

  • Launch location: Satellite campus in Pune

  • Long-term plan: Expand or shift to the main Mumbai campus once infrastructure is fully ready

This fits into a larger vision where IIM Mumbai has proposed a satellite campus focused on finance, technology, data science and related areas, aligned with the Viksit Maharashtra 2047 roadmap.

For students, Pune is already a big education and tech hub, so internships and industry projects with fintech, SaaS, consulting and analytics firms could become a strong feature over time.

Curriculum: Business + Deep Tech

From what has been shared so far, the curriculum is being positioned as “management plus digital” rather than pure engineering or pure BBA. Core themes are likely to include:

  • Digital & Tech:

    • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    • Machine Learning (ML)

    • Data Science and Business Analytics

    • Internet of Things (IoT)

    • Blockchain

    • Automation / Hyper-automation

    • Generative AI

  • Management & Business:

    • Finance, accounting and financial decision-making

    • Marketing and digital marketing

    • Operations and supply chain

    • Strategy, product management, digital transformation

    • Possibly electives in fintech, tech policy, etc.

The positioning is very clear: graduates should be able to talk to both the CEO and the CTO – understand how to run a business, but also how technology is being built and deployed underneath.

Early reports also mention strong industry collaboration, structured internships and projects with automation and AI partners, which will matter a lot for placements later.

Admissions: Which exam will they use?

Official admission details are still to be formally released by IIM Mumbai. As of now, what’s in the public domain is indicative, not final.

Based on current reports:

  • IIM Mumbai has sent a proposal to NTA to allow admission through JEE (Main) scores.

  • They may create multiple pathways, similar to what other IIMs have done (for example, IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode for their UG programs), which could include:

    • JEE Main (if NTA approves)

    • An IIM Mumbai–specific entrance test

    • Possibly another standardised test route

So for current students in Classes 9, 10 and 11, the safest strategy is:

  1. Keep JEE-level math and quantitative skills strong.

  2. Build comfort with basic programming, data handling, and logical reasoning.

  3. Track official announcements on the IIM Mumbai website as the program and its exam pattern get formalised.

Fees and affordability

Preliminary estimates from counselling platforms indicate:

  • Tuition fees: Roughly ₹6–8 lakh per year

  • Total program cost (4 years): Around ₹24–32 lakh, excluding hostel/mess

  • Scholarships and aid: Likely, but not yet detailed; to be confirmed in the official brochure

This is broadly in line with other newer IIM undergraduate offerings and some private tech-management programs in India.

For a family, the real question will be ROI versus alternatives:

  • A traditional B.Tech in Computer Science or Data Science

  • A 5-year IPM (Integrated Program in Management) at IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, etc.

  • A BBA / BMS + later MBA route

  • International options in data science + business

That’s where individual profile mapping becomes crucial.

Who is this degree ideal for?

This BS in Digital Sciences and Business Management makes the most sense for students who:

  • Enjoy math, data and tech – but don’t necessarily want hardcore engineering.

  • Like business, strategy, product, entrepreneurship, but want more than a plain BBA.

  • Are comfortable with a quant-heavy, competitive environment and national-level entrance exams.

  • Are thinking of careers in:

    • Digital transformation and consulting

    • Product management (especially tech products)

    • Business analytics/data science roles

    • Tech-driven roles in finance, supply chain, marketing and operations

If a student hates math, coding and data, this is probably not the best fit – even if the “IIM” tag looks attractive.

Key advantages of IIM Mumbai’s UG program

Purely from what we know so far, the upside looks like this:

  • IIM ecosystem exposure right after Class 12, not after graduation.

  • A genuinely interdisciplinary degree: digital tech + management from day one.

  • Location advantage: Pune to start with (big education + tech hub), with Mumbai as the parent campus – close to RBI, SEBI, BSE, NSE and major corporate HQs.

  • Curriculum aligned with where the world is going – AI, ML, data and automation at the centre, not as “add-ons.”

  • Long-term branding potential: being in the first few batches of a flagship UG program of a top-ranked IIM.

The flip side:

  • You’re joining a new program, so there is no past undergraduate placement data yet.

  • Details of hostels, exact faculty mix for UG, mentoring structures, and exchange programs will take time to stabilise.

  • Admission rules, quota structure, and test pattern may evolve over the first few years.

So this is high-potential, but not a plug-and-play, low-risk choice like a 30-year-old established program.

What should students in Classes 9–12 do now?

If you (or your child) are even remotely interested in this program:

  1. Get serious about quant:

    • Strong foundation in math till at least Class 11–12 level.

    • Practice JEE-style questions for comfort with speed and accuracy.

  2. Build a digital profile:

    • Python / R basics, or at least one programming language.

    • Simple projects: small data-analysis projects, basic ML models, apps, or IoT mini-projects.

  3. Explore management early:

    • School clubs (entrepreneurship, economics, tech clubs).

    • Competitions in business plans, analytics, or case challenges.

  4. Stay updated:

    • Regularly check IIM Mumbai’s official website and credible news sources for:

      • Official brochure

      • Final admission pathways

      • Exact eligibility criteria and timelines.

  5. Benchmark against alternatives:

    • Compare this option with IPM, BTech, BBA, international degrees and niche programs in data science or economics. The “best” choice depends entirely on the student’s strengths, financial comfort and long-term plans (India vs abroad, job vs research vs entrepreneurship, etc.).
